Why should I become a Christian when the Worst Hypocrites are in the Church?
One major excuse people often give to refuse embracing Christianity concerns the hypocrites found in the church, both past and present. They always point to the past misdeeds done in the name of Christ. Some people tend to do things saying that “Jesus Christ told me to.” But in fact it is the total opposite.
It cannot be denied that there are hypocrites in church. In fact if you open your eyes wide enough and not just look at the church you will be able to see hypocrisy everywhere – even in the government! There is hypocrisy in the church, in the school, in the family, in the government, everywhere.
Hypocrites are basically a person who say something but does the other. They live in inconsistency of their words and claims. Read the daily newspaper and you may just come across news of church pastors, deacons, and ministers caught and charged with adultery, fraud, evil schemes and alcoholism and anything which is the total opposite of what they preach or believe in.
However although the church contains hypocrites it does not mean that all Christians are hypocrites. With every example of hypocrisy being pointed to in the church, a counter example can be pointed out showing many Christians living consistently with the Bible and God’s teachings.
It is important we do not confuse hypocrisy with sin. All Christians are sinners but not all Christians are hypocrites. There is a huge misconception that when someone claims to be a Christian, then he does not sin. This is not true because the truth is when one calls himself a Christian; he is admitting that he is a sinner.
All human beings including those of pastoral positions in the church are prone to the sin because of the state of the world we live in today which so contrasts with the Bible’s teachings. We must not assume that just because Christian sins therefore Christianity is not true. The rise and fall of Christianity lies on the person of Jesus, if Jesus was a hypocrite then by all means, call Christianity a terrible flaw in history. But the truth is Jesus was not a sinner nor was he a hypocrite. In all four Gospels of the Bible there was no account of Him ever sinning. This is because Jesus lived in full consistency with his teachings from the beginning to the end of his ministry on earth.
Let’s look at one illustration for this post. A manufacturer of a car company just came up with this new model he has just created. And he advertises it saying this is the “Best Model Ever Created in History!” which boasts of all the latest equipments in the car and all going for a cheap price. And then we see him driving a car manufactured by his rival company! A total contrast of what he is selling! How can a person say that his car is the best yet he does not even drive one?! But this does not deny the fact that maybe his car is still the best, just that most probably he liked the other model better because of its color.
The same is true with Christianity. People may claim that it is true but yet lead lives inconsistent with the claims but this does not and will not invalidate the truth that Christianity is true.
