Matthew 7:21-23
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’
Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”
Many of us are very busy doing many things in the church. All of us are capable of doing one thing very well and we used our talents to serve in the church. This is all good and this should be the way.
But we tend to be disillusioned by doing.
Many of us are either serving in one or two ministries in the church and we come to church every week because we are on duty to do something. When a time comes when there is nothing for us to do, we do not feel the need to come to church anymore. I have been in the church long enough to know of many people who were once serving so passionately in the church and now they are no where to be seen. Yes, they may defend themselves saying they have different commitments like college, work or family but there is no excuse for someone not to attend a church. Where then does your spiritual food come from? If you are faithfully doing your devotion at home then good for you but still you do not see the need stated in Hebrews 10:24-25. Bottom-line is this: there is no excuse for someone not coming to church.
You see the pattern? When the doing stops, the coming stops too. People who serve in the church stops coming once there is nothing for them to do.
But God is more concerned about your being than your doing.
We often spend time doing the work of God without being a person of God.
In the Bible verse above, we see Jesus giving a warning to us who are more concerned about doing than being. Jesus gave an example of people coming to Him and telling Him, “I have done this for you. I have done that for you.” But Jesus’ reply was, “I never knew you.”
Today’s post is pretty simple and straightforward. God is more concerned about your relationship with Him and your spiritual being than the work you are doing for Him. So stop spending too much time doing the work of God and start spending time with God more.
But do not get me wrong. Doing the work of God is important but if you are doing the work of God and neglecting your spiritual maturity, it is wrong. I would rather you stop doing and start getting serious about your faith and relationship with God first.
Your being is much more important than your doing.
The power of God through your relationship and time spent with God is the foundation of a powerful and fruitful work in the ministry.
