Salt and Light...
Throughout history, salt has been such a precious commodity that wars were even fought over it. One of the causes of the French Revolution was the high tax on slat imposed by Louis XVI. Salt was used as a medium of exchange. At one time, the Moorish merchants traded salt for gold, gram by gram! Some African tribes used slabs of rock salt as money. The English word “salary” comes from the Latin “salarium” (sal - salt.) The Greeks paid for slaves with salt, giving rise to the expression “not worth his salt.”
Today, salt is used as a precious commodity, used for seasoning food, preserving meat and manufacturing soap and glass among other things. Salt also adds to the enjoyment of food. Job said, “Will tasteless things be eaten without salt?” (Job 6:6) A small pinch of salt changes the flavor of a whole pot of curry.
Light is everything. With light there is sight. The absence of light brings the presence of darkness. Light is everywhere around us. The first light bulb was created by a Christian so that he could read his Bible at night and do his devotion.
When a great amount of light is well focused, it becomes a laser. Laser is so powerful it can cut through metal. In some surgeries, lasers are used to destroy bacteria and the cause of a particular disease. Doctors use laser beams to kill cancer cells within the body. The ray of the sunlight when focused on a magnifying glass can start fire and burn object. There were myths that ancient wars were fought using large mirrors used to focus light on an enemy ship and burn it. When light is present, darkness disappears.
It is no wonder that Jesus said in his parable,
Matthew 5:13-16
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
