The Ultimate Showdown
In the blue corner, weighing in at more than ten thousand pounds, heavily armed and frantically worshiping their god, were the prophets of Baal.
In the red corner, weighing in at less than 250 pounds, calm and devout to the Lord his God, was Elijah the prophet of the Most High.
The ring was also known as Mount Carmel. This fight took place in the Old Testaments in the book of 1 Kings Chapter 18. This was a showdown between the 450 prophets of Baal and the one prophet of God, Elijah.
Elijah was bold enough to stand up and proclaim that the God he worships is the one and only true God and apart from Him there is no other gods. Elijah made his stand in front of 450 prophets of Baal the fake god and 400 more prophets of Asherah, another fake god.
Elijah - one against 850 men...
Elijah called for a showdown between the worshipers of Baal and the worshiper of the True God. He ordered the prophets of Baal to gather on Mount Carmel and asked them to prepare a bull and put the bull on the wood but do not set it on fire. They are to call on their god to send fire from heaven and burn up the bull. So the prophets of Baal, also had faith in their god, took up the challenge and did as told. From morning to evening they called on their god Baal but nothing happened. They danced around the bull and slashed themselves with swords as a ritual but nothing happened.
Then cheeky Elijah decided to poke fun at the prophets of Baal and taunted them, “Haha, I think your god is asleep. Surely there is a god ma. Shout louder. Baal must be busy or traveling. Shout louder. Haha!” =) It is okay to be funny when you know God is on your side hehe.
When it was time for Elijah to do his thing, he ordered his men to pour a lot of water on the bull and it soaked the bull. So much water was poured that it flooded the trench built around the bull. Imagine how hard would it take to set the bull on fire with all that amount of water! However, Elijah called unto the Lord his God. And like magic, fire came down from heaven and licked up the water and burnt the wood, bull, stones and even the soil!
Elijah won!
When God is on your side, you are the majority. Elijah stood on Mount Carmel with the Lord God on his side. Although he was only one man with a big faith, he won the face-off because he had a big God on his side.
Do you have the faith of Elijah? Do you dare to stand up against the world’s religion and proclaim your faith like how Elijah did? Come to think of it, we don’t even bother about telling people about our God huh?
Therefore let us pray that God will give us the faith of Elijah. Remember when God is on our side, you are the majority. The other 850 against you are the minority. Elijah proved that.
You + God = Majority
