Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.
Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore,
to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Yea it is a pretty easy to understand huh?
Let me briefly explain to you this verse. First Jesus is speaking to his disciples, and we are all his disciples are we not? So let us hear what he has to say to us all.
Jesus is telling us that the harvest is plentiful. When farmers go out to gather crops, they will only go out when the crops are ripe right? So here Jesus uses this example to mean that there are a lot of “ripen crops” out there. These ripen crops indicate people who are spiritually ripen and are ready to receive the Gospel.
But there is a problem. There are more spiritually ripe people who are ready to accept Jesus into their lives than there are workers to bring them in. What will happen to the crops or plants if there are no one to harvest them? They will eventually wither and die. Think...
Now we are to ask the “Lord of the harvest” to send out workers into his harvest field. This tells us two things. Christians need to listen to the Holy Spirit and let God lead them to people who are open to the Gospel. We are to ask God to give us whatever needed to share the Gospel and to send us out. Second, note “his harvest field” it is his, not ours. Our harvest field might comprise of our workplace where we work to earn money so we go into our harvest field to work. But here Jesus wants his disciples to go into God’s harvest field.
The key of sharing the Gospel is to do it under the leadership of the Holy Spirit and with sensitivity and genuine love.
John 9:4
As long as it is day,
we must do the work of him who sent me.
Night is coming when no one can work.
Let Us Go Out Into The Field,
